about

Ross Tones' Throwing Snow makes his album debut with the kaleidoscopic techno-bass hybrids of 'Mosaic' for Houndstooth. For the better part of 7 years Ross has established an uncontainable style digesting and reworking elements of garage, footwork, techno and hip hop with a folk/jazz-wise musicality and electronic muscularity for myriad labels including Tom Lea's Local Action, Alex Nut's Ho Tep, and his own Snowfall. Vocals have always been a strong part of Throwing Snow's DNA and expectantly 'Mosaic' is no different, sporting guest contributions by old pal Py, plus his fellow RBMA alumni Adda Kaleh and KNOX, plus Ninja Tune's Kid A. Woven with an expansive instrumental palette and upfront electronics, they make for an emotional session, swinging back and forth between densely arranged instrumentals such as the brutally elegant 'Avarice' and trance-techno of 'Saltare (Parts 1 & 2)', thru ornate dubstep in 'Linguis' to the Matthew Herbert-like 'Pathfinder', via pop-strained vocal pieces squaring up to that Tri Angle sound of Holy Other et al on 'As You Fall' with Py, or hyper trip hop styles on 'Maera' with the Lana Del Rey-like Adda Kaleh. ~ Words from Boomkat
